Shipping zones explained
A shipping zone measures the distance between origin and destination. UPS and FedEx number ground zones 2 through 8 across the contiguous US and price every parcel by zone. The same package costs substantially more in a high zone than a low one, and storing inventory closer to customers lowers both.
Why zones matter more as weight goes up
Zone and weight multiply. On a 5 lb parcel the gap between Zone 3 and Zone 7 is small in dollars. On a 90 lb parcel it is often the difference between a profitable order and a loss, the same percentage applied to a much larger number.
That is the mechanical reason heavy brands need distributed inventory and light brands can manage without it.
Zone skipping
Moving freight in bulk to a destination region, then injecting it into the parcel network near the customer. It converts a long-zone parcel move into a short-zone one plus a line-haul, and works when you have enough regional volume to fill the line-haul.
Distributed inventory achieves the same thing structurally, the stock is already near the customer.
Zone prices the surcharges too
| Zone | FedEx Additional Handling trigger and fee basis (2026 list) |
|---|---|
| Zone 2 | FedEx: over 50 lb actual weight; fee is zone-based |
| Zones 3–4 | FedEx: over 50 lb actual weight; fee is zone-based |
| Zones 5–6 | FedEx: over 50 lb actual weight; fee is zone-based |
| Zones 7 and up | FedEx: over 50 lb actual weight; fee is zone-based |
On a parcel over 50 lb, a shorter zone lowers the surcharge as well as the base rate. Source: FedEx 2026 surcharge and fee changes.

Questions
How many shipping zones are there? +
UPS and FedEx use zones 2 through 8 for ground shipments within the contiguous US. Alaska and Hawaii are priced separately.
How do I find my zone? +
Carrier zone charts, keyed on origin and destination ZIP.
What is the fastest way to reduce zones? +
Hold inventory in more than one place. It is the only lever that works without renegotiating anything.
Do surcharges change with the zone? +
Some do. FedEx prices Additional Handling and Oversize by zone, so on a heavy parcel a shorter zone cuts the surcharge as well as the base rate.
