Setting Shopify shipping rates for products over 70 lb
For products over 70 lb, Shopify's native weight-based rates still work, but carrier-calculated rates give you the real numbers because they pull live UPS, FedEx or USPS pricing from the order's weight, dimensions and destination. The key limits to know: third-party carrier-calculated shipping needs the Shopify Advanced or Plus plan, and flat-rate USPS packaging caps out at 70 lb, so heavier orders cannot ride flat-rate boxes.
Two ways to set the rate
Weight-based rates let you set a price for each weight range. Carrier-calculated rates ask the carrier at checkout. Both depend on accurate product weights, and the second also depends on accurate package sizes.

Questions
Can I set weight-based rates for items over 70 lb? +
Yes. Weight-based rates let you set a price for each weight range, and there is no Shopify-imposed ceiling on the ranges you define. The requirement is accurate product weights: if a product has no weight, its rate will not calculate correctly at checkout (Shopify Help Center, "Setting up shipping zones and rates," accessed 2026-10-15).
How do carrier-calculated rates work for heavy items? +
You connect your own UPS, FedEx or USPS account, and at checkout Shopify requests live rates from that carrier based on the order's weight, dimensions and destination. Customers then pay close to what the label costs you. These rates depend on correct weights and package sizes, and they are calculated per shipment and added together when an order splits into more than one shipment (Shopify Help Center, "Understanding shipping options by market," accessed 2026-10-15).
Is there a plan requirement for real carrier rates? +
Yes. Third-party carrier-calculated shipping is available on Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus plans. Shopify Grow stores can add it for an additional monthly fee or by switching to annual billing (Shopify Help Center, "Third-party carrier-calculated shipping," accessed 2026-10-15).
Why do heavy orders matter for carrier-calculated accuracy? +
Carriers charge by size as well as weight. Shopify sends your default package dimensions to the carrier with the order weight, and when a package's volume exceeds one cubic foot, dimensional weight applies, so the customer is charged on whichever is larger (Shopify Help Center, "Understanding shipment packaging and weights," accessed 2026-10-15). For boxes over 70 lb, getting the dimensions right is what keeps the checkout rate from drifting from the label cost.
What is the 70 lb flat-rate limit? +
It is a carrier rule, not a Shopify one. USPS flat rate packaging caps at 70 lb for domestic shipments (Shopify Help Center, "Understanding shipment packaging and weights," accessed 2026-10-15). Orders above that cannot use a flat-rate box, so you need weight-based or calculated rates to cover them.
Should I add a handling fee on top? +
That is a judgment call. If your pack materials and carrier surcharges for heavy boxes are material, a per-order handling fee in the rate profile is a common way to keep the checkout rate from undercharging. Shopify lets you add flat or percentage-based adjustments to calculated rates (Shopify Help Center, "Third-party carrier-calculated shipping," accessed 2026-10-15).
When does a Shopify app beat native rates? +
When heavy orders trigger accessorials that native calculated rates do not always surface, such as additional handling or large-package charges, an app with dimensional rating and freight rules fills the gap. That is covered in our guide on Shopify apps for heavy shipping rates.
