Amazon FBM for heavy items (50 to 149 lb): shipping requirements
Amazon FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant, or merchant fulfilled) means you store, pack and ship each order yourself, and Amazon scores you on late shipments, cancellations and valid tracking. For 50 to 149 lb items the carrier side is the hard part: UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling above 50 lb, UPS adds a Large Package line above 110 lb, and parcel service stops at 150 lb. A standard FBM listing has no Prime badge; Seller Fulfilled Prime is the route to it.
Amazon FBM shipping requirements
Amazon publishes targets for merchant-fulfilled orders, and an account that stays outside them puts its seller-fulfilled selling at risk. Confirm each shipment, with tracking, inside the handling time you set.
| Measure | Amazon target | What it means for a heavy order |
|---|---|---|
| Late shipment rate | Under 4% | Set handling time to what your warehouse really does with a heavy carton |
| Pre-fulfillment cancel rate | Under 2.5% | Cancel only for a stock-out, so keep stock counts right before you list |
| Valid tracking rate | Over 95% | Tracking must be on the order when you confirm shipment |
| Order defect rate | Under 1% | Damage complaints and A-to-z claims count toward it, so carton strength matters |
| Handling time, from Jun 29, 2026 | An accurate SKU-level time: turn on Automated Handling Time or keep SKU-specific times | Do not leave a heavy SKU on a default that the warehouse cannot meet |
Targets as reported by Feedvisor (Mar 6, 2026). The handling-time rule is from Novadata (May 30, 2026). Confirm all of them in Seller Central.
Carrier limits for a 50 to 149 lb parcel
| Line | What happens | Carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Over 50 lb actual weight | Additional Handling on every package | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 48 in on the longest side, or 30 in on the second | Additional Handling for size | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 10,368 cubic in | Additional Handling for size | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 96 in long, or 130 in length plus girth | Large Package (UPS) or Oversize (FedEx), billed at a 90 lb minimum | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 17,280 cubic in, or over 110 lb actual weight | Large Package, billed at a 90 lb minimum | UPS |
| Over 150 lb, 108 in long or 165 in length plus girth | Not a parcel any more: LTL freight | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 70 lb | USPS does not take it | USPS |

Does FBM get the Prime badge?
A standard FBM listing does not carry the Prime badge (AMZScout, updated Oct 3, 2026). Seller Fulfilled Prime is the route to it: you ship the Prime orders yourself or through a 3PL, and Amazon scores a 30-day trial first.
Since July 6, 2026 the Extra Large tier needs a two-day delivery date on at least 25% of Prime page views and a five-day date on at least 60%. Weekend page views count again from October 18, 2026. The Amazon SFP 3PL guide sets out the rest.
FBA, FBM or SFP for a heavy item
| Route | Who ships | Prime badge | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| FBA | Amazon | Yes | You want Amazon to store, ship and handle service, and its fees for your size tier still leave a margin |
| FBM, from your own space or a 3PL | You or your 3PL | Not on a standard listing | Volume is low or uneven, or you want control of packaging and carriers |
| Seller Fulfilled Prime | You or your 3PL | Yes, after the 30-day trial | You can hold the SFP metrics, weekend shipping included, on enough Prime orders to complete the trial |
Why heavy sellers move from FBA to FBM
Sellers of heavy and bulky products give four reasons: Amazon's higher fees for bulky and heavy products, storage cost on slow-moving stock, dimensional-weight and inbound-placement charges, and damage or packaging they cannot control (AMZScout, Oct 3, 2026; Novadata, Oct 12, 2026; Netpeak, Oct 9, 2026; SellerLabs, Oct 5, 2026).
FBM moves those choices to you: the carton, the carrier and the warehouse. It also moves the carrier surcharges to you, which is why the carton check below comes first.
How to ship an FBM heavy item without surprise charges
Weigh and measure the packed carton, rounding each side up to the next whole inch.
Check it against the carrier lines above. Shrink the carton before you list the product, not after the first invoice.
Above 70 lb use UPS or FedEx ground, since USPS stops at 70 lb. Above 150 lb it is LTL freight.
Set handling time per SKU to what the warehouse really does with a heavy carton.
Buy the label, confirm the shipment and put tracking on the order inside the handling time.
Ship from the warehouse nearest the customer where you can. Zone sets the base rate and, at FedEx, the heavy surcharges too.
Plan returns before you need them. A 90 lb return is expensive to ship back and to scrap. What a bulky return costs has the detail.
When a 3PL fits FBM
A 3PL helps when your own space, lifting or carrier rates are the limit. It stores the stock, ships each order inside your handling time and puts tracking on the order. For 50 to 149 lb products, look for one that ships this band every day, shows surcharges as separate lines and holds stock in more than one place. Best 3PL for heavy products has the checklist.
ShippingCow stores, picks, packs and ships 50–149 lb parcels from its own US warehouses in New Jersey, California and Texas, and handles returns. To compare, send 30 recent shipments for a Cost Audit. You see what you pay today next to what you would pay with ShippingCow, by weight, including where we would cost you more.

Questions
What does Amazon FBM mean? +
Fulfilled by Merchant: you, or a 3PL working for you, store, pack and ship the order instead of Amazon. It is also called merchant fulfilled. Amazon still scores you on shipment timing, cancellations and tracking.
What are the Amazon FBM shipping requirements? +
Ship inside your handling time, confirm the shipment with valid tracking, and keep late shipments under 4%, pre-fulfillment cancels under 2.5% and valid tracking over 95%. Since June 29, 2026 each SKU also needs an accurate handling time (Feedvisor, Mar 6, 2026; Novadata, May 30, 2026).
Does Amazon FBM get the Prime badge? +
Not on a standard listing. Seller Fulfilled Prime is how a seller who ships its own orders gets the badge, after a 30-day trial with strict speed, tracking and cancellation limits.
What is the heaviest item I can ship FBM by parcel? +
150 lb per package at UPS and FedEx, and 70 lb at USPS. Above 150 lb, 108 in long or 165 in in length plus girth, the item moves as LTL freight.
How do I avoid carrier surcharges on a heavy FBM parcel? +
Keep the packed carton at 110 lb or less, 17,280 cubic inches or less, 96 in or less on the longest side and 130 in or less in length plus girth. That avoids the Large Package and Oversize lines. Parcels over 50 lb still pay Additional Handling for weight.
When should a heavy seller move from FBM to Seller Fulfilled Prime? +
When Prime orders are steady enough to complete the trial and the warehouse can hold the metrics, weekend shipping included. If volume is low or uneven, or nobody ships on a weekend day, stay on FBM and revisit it.
Do I need a 3PL to sell heavy items on FBM? +
No. You can ship from your own space. A 3PL helps when space, lifting, carrier rates or weekend shipping are the limit. Ask any 3PL what share of its volume is over 50 lb, and for a sample invoice that shows surcharges as separate lines.
