Heavy parcel vs LTL freight: where the line is
When a box nears the 150 lb parcel limit, the options are LTL freight or splitting the order into smaller parcels, because UPS and FedEx stop taking a single package above that weight. ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, so it works right up to that limit.
| Factor | Parcel | LTL freight |
|---|---|---|
| Weight limit | 150 lb, 108 in long, 165 in length plus girth per package (USPS: 70 lb) | No practical ceiling |
| Priced on | Billable weight × zone + surcharges | Weight, class, distance, accessorials |
| Speed | Faster, predictable | Slower, more variable |
| Delivery | To the door | Often to the curb; liftgate is an accessorial |
| Best for | Single units, DTC | Consolidated volume, B2B, pallets |
A single unit to a consumer is almost always parcel if it fits under 150 lb. Multiple units to one address are usually freight.
Worth rechecking
A product packed at 138 lb is a parcel product. If your packed weight has come down since you set your shipping strategy, your mode may be wrong.
Three lines inside parcel
Parcel is not one price band. At UPS and FedEx a package over 50 lb pays Additional Handling. At UPS, one over 110 lb is a Large Package with a 90 lb minimum billable weight. At 150 lb, parcel ends.
A product's packed weight decides which band every one of its shipments lands in, which is why a few pounds of packaging can matter more than a rate negotiation.

Questions
Does ShippingCow ship near the parcel limit? +
ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, so boxes right up to the parcel limit sit inside its stated range. Orders in that band are received, stored, picked, packed and shipped from US warehouses.
Can a 3PL run both parcel and freight for the same brand? +
A catalog can mix items that ship parcel with items that need freight, so ask whether the 3PL ships freight itself or hands it off. ShippingCow focuses on heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb range and serves online brands rather than only pallet or container freight.
