What it costs to ship an oversize parcel

Shipping costs step up at set weight and size lines, because carriers add surcharges for boxes they must handle by hand. At UPS and FedEx the first line is 50 lb, USPS parcel service stops at 70 lb, and a large or oversize package bills at a minimum of 90 lb. ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, so its boxes sit on or past those lines.

The four things you are paying for

  1. Billable weight: the greater of actual and dimensional weight, with a 90 lb minimum once a package counts as oversize.

  2. Zone: the distance from origin to destination, 2 through 8 across the contiguous US.

  3. Surcharges: Additional Handling or Oversize, residential, delivery area, peak demand, and fuel.

  4. Your contract: the discount off published rates, which varies by service and lane.

Most cost-reduction advice goes after point four. On products 50 to 149 lb, point two is usually bigger and easier to change.

The UPS 110 lb line

Since January 26, 2026, any UPS package over 110 lb actual weight is a Large Package, whatever its size. For a product packed at 111 to 149 lb, that means a large-package surcharge on every UPS shipment. A dense carton at 110 lb or less that stays under the size lines avoids it.
