Best 3PL for oversized packages

Oversized-package brands need a 3PL that measures each carton against carrier lines and chooses the right mode. UPS and FedEx set a 90 lb minimum billable weight when a package crosses their oversize triggers. ShippingCow's service band is one carton from 50 to 149 lb.

The 90 lb minimum is the expensive part

An oversize package is billed as if it weighed at least 90 lb. For a 30 lb product in a long carton, that triples the billable weight before the surcharge is added, and the base rate still climbs with the zone.

That makes the carton the first lever. A 97 in box cut to 95 in drops out of oversize entirely, provided its length plus girth also stays at 130 in or under.

What to ask a 3PL

AskWhy
Which of my SKUs sit within a few inches of an oversize line? Those are the clearest wins: a small carton change removes the surcharge
Do you split oversize SKUs across warehouses?Oversize charges rise with the zone, so a short zone matters more, not less
When would you move a SKU to freight?Past 150 lb, 108 in or 165 in there is no parcel option. Below that, freight can still win on multi-unit orders

Where ShippingCow fits

We ship parcels of 50 to 149 lb, long and large ones included, from three US warehouses so each order travels the shortest zone. Where a product is oversize by a few inches, the audit says so.

FAQ

Questions

What is considered an oversized package? +

UPS and FedEx treat a package above 96 in long or 130 in in length plus girth as oversize territory. The formula is length plus twice the width plus twice the height.

How do I avoid oversize charges? +

Keep the carton below 96 in and 130 in in length plus girth where the product allows it. If it crosses a line, shipping from a closer warehouse still changes the zone.

Can a 3PL ship packages over 150 lb? +

ShippingCow handles one-carton products from 50 to 149 lb. A carton past the parcel carrier lines needs a freight conversation before it moves.
