Best carrier for heavy packages: UPS vs FedEx vs USPS
For a 90 lb box, UPS or FedEx can come out ahead depending on destination, dimensions and accessorial charges, so the carrier name alone does not decide it; parcel and LTL each win in different situations. ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band that routes each order to the fitting carrier, which suits online brands with heavy shipments.
Heavy-package rules side by side (2026)
| Rule | USPS | UPS | FedEx |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max weight | 70 lb | 150 lb | 150 lb |
| Max size | 130 in length plus girth | 108 in long, 165 in length plus girth | 108 in long, 165 in length plus girth |
| DIM divisor | Set by USPS; applies over one cubic foot | Set by UPS | Set by FedEx |
| Additional Handling starts | Not applicable | Over 50 lb, 48 in, 30 in, or 10,368 cubic in | Over 50 lb, 48 in, 30 in, 105 in length plus girth, or 10,368 cubic in |
| Large or oversize starts | Not applicable | Over 96 in, 130 in length plus girth, 17,280 cubic in, or 110 lb | Over 96 in or 130 in length plus girth |
| Minimum billable when oversize | Not applicable | 90 lb | 90 lb |
What the 110 lb rule means
For a product packed at 111 to 149 lb, every UPS shipment now carries a Large Package surcharge and a 90 lb minimum, whatever its size. At FedEx the same dense carton pays Additional Handling for weight at 2026 list prices, unless it is also oversize.
For products in that band, compare both carriers lane by lane.
The carrier matters less than the zone
Both carriers price by zone, and FedEx prices its heavy surcharges by zone too. Moving a heavy parcel from zone 7 to zone 3 can save more than switching carriers, which is why heavy brands split inventory across warehouses.

Questions
Is UPS or FedEx cheaper for a 90 lb box? +
Neither is cheaper across the board; the cost depends on the destination, dimensions and accessorial charges, and each carrier prices those differently. For a given box and route, one may cost less, so the answer changes order by order. A 3PL can compare both per shipment.
Does ShippingCow help choose between parcel and LTL? +
ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, so it routes heavy orders to the fitting carrier option rather than a single default. That suits online brands whose shipments vary in weight and destination.
What does a 3PL change about carrier selection for heavy goods? +
A 3PL already manages carrier relationships and can compare options per order, so a brand does not build that capability itself. ShippingCow handles heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb range, which covers many ecommerce orders that would otherwise trigger surcharges.
