Best 3PL for bulky and large items
Bulky-item sellers need a 3PL that controls carton size and warehouse distance before the label prints. UPS and FedEx add dimension handling above 48 in on the longest side or 30 in on the second side. A carton above 96 in or 130 in in length plus girth reaches their Large Package or Oversize lines.
The size lines that set the price (2026)
| Line | What happens | Carriers |
|---|---|---|
| Every package | Bills on the greater of actual and dimensional weight (L × W × H ÷ the carrier's divisor) | UPS, FedEx |
| Over one cubic foot | Dimensional weight applies (new rule since July 12, 2026) | USPS |
| Over 48 in on the longest side, or 30 in on the second | Additional Handling, dimension | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 10,368 cubic in | Additional Handling, dimension (the cubic trigger added in 2026) | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 96 in long, or 130 in length plus girth | Large Package (UPS) or Oversize (FedEx), billed at a 90 lb minimum | UPS, FedEx |
| Over 108 in long, or 165 in length plus girth | Not a parcel any more: freight | UPS, FedEx |
Bulky is not the same as heavy
A heavy carton bills on what it weighs. A bulky one bills on the space it takes up: a 31 lb patio chair in a 40 × 30 × 24 in box carries 208 lb of dimensional weight.
For bulky items the first lever is the carton. The second is the zone, because once dimensional weight is fixed, the only thing left to change is distance.
What to ask a 3PL about bulky items
| Ask | Why |
|---|---|
| Will you measure my cartons at receiving and flag the ones near a line? | A carton at 49 in pays a dimension surcharge a 47 in carton does not |
| Which divisor is in my rate? | Each carrier sets it. A higher contract divisor lowers dimensional weight, so ask for it on your rate sheet |
| Which warehouse ships each region? | Zone multiplies dimensional weight exactly as it multiplies actual weight |
| How do you charge for storage? | Bulky items pay for space. Ask whether storage is per unit, per pallet or per cubic foot |
Where ShippingCow fits
We ship bulky products that pack into one carton of 50 to 149 lb actual weight, including furniture, fitness equipment and appliances, from New Jersey, California and Texas. We are strongest on dense cartons, where the zone does the work.
A light, bulky item under 50 lb is outside our range, and so is a product in three or more loose cartons.

Questions
What is the best way to ship bulky items? +
Match the carton to the product, then check the 48 in, 30 in, and 130 in carrier lines before you choose a service. Zone still matters after the dimensions are fixed.
What counts as a bulky item for shipping? +
A parcel is bulky when dimensional weight exceeds actual weight or the carton crosses a carrier size line. UPS and FedEx use 48 in on the longest side, 30 in on the second side, and 10,368 cubic inches as dimension triggers.
Do 3PLs charge more for bulky items? +
Ask for storage space, dimensional weight, and size surcharges as separate lines. That shows how the carton and destination affect the shipment record.
