Dimensional weight explained

Dimensional weight means carriers bill for the space a box takes up as well as its scale weight, so a large, light box can cost as much as a dense, heavy one. ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, where dense products mostly bill on actual weight.

How to calculate dimensional weight

  1. Measure length, width and height in inches at the widest point of each side, packaging included, and round each measurement up to the next whole inch.

  2. Multiply the three for cubic inches.

  3. Divide by the carrier's DIM divisor. USPS changed its dimensional rule on July 12, 2026 for packages over one cubic foot. A contract can set a different number.

  4. Round the result up to the next whole pound.

  5. Compare it with the actual weight. The higher number is the billable weight.

Worked example: a big, light carton

A patio chair box measuring 40 × 30 × 24 in holds 28,800 cubic inches. Divided by the carrier's divisor, that is about 208 lb of dimensional weight for a chair that weighs 31 lb.

The same box is 148 in in length plus girth (40 + 2 × 30 + 2 × 24). That is past the 130 in line where UPS and FedEx treat a package as large or oversize, with a 90 lb minimum billable weight and a surcharge on top. On a big, light carton the box size decides the bill.

Worked example: a dense, heavy carton

A 2,000Wh power station packed at 26 × 18 × 16 in holds 7,488 cubic inches. Divided by the carrier's divisor, that is about 54 lb dimensional. It weighs 62 lb, so it bills on actual weight and the divisor never touches it.

That is the normal case for products of 50 to 149 lb: a dense carton bills on what it weighs, so the lever that moves the bill is distance, not packaging. Shipping zones explained covers that lever.

What you can do about it

LeverEffectWorks on
Reduce carton sizeCuts dimensional weight directlyBig, light cartons
Negotiate the divisorA higher divisor means a lower dimensional weightShippers with volume and a contract
Shorten the zoneLowers the rate the billable weight is multiplied byEvery carton, dense or light
Switch to freightFreight prices on weight, class and distance insteadOver 150 lb, or many units to one address

A dense carton only responds to the last two rows. The first two do nothing when actual weight is already the higher number.

FAQ

Questions

What is dimensional weight? +

Dimensional weight is a charge based on the space a box occupies, computed from its length, width and height, compared against its actual scale weight. Carriers bill the larger of the two, so a light but large box can cost as much as a heavier compact one.

How does dimensional weight affect dense, heavy products? +

Dense products usually weigh more than their volume suggests, so their scale weight is the larger figure and dimensional weight adds little. Large, light boxes are the ones most affected. Heavy dense products mainly need a 3PL in their weight band.

Does ShippingCow handle dense, heavy products? +

ShippingCow is a US 3PL for heavy parcels in the 50 to 149 lb band, which suits dense products whose weight, rather than box size, drives the charge. Brands can ask how a specific product fits that band.

How can a brand reduce dimensional weight charges? +

Use a box that fits the product closely and enter dimensions accurately, since overstated measurements raise the charge. A 3PL that ships many heavy orders can advise on packaging. ShippingCow works in the 50 to 149 lb range.
