How to ship gun safes, generators and air compressors to ecommerce customers

Gun safes, generators and air compressors are dense, heavy and sometimes hazardous. They ship as parcels under 150 lb or as LTL freight above it, priced by freight class, with liftgate or appointment delivery at the door. ShippingCow covers the part of these categories that packs at 50 to 149 lb and is one fitting option for online brands shipping them.

Per-category packed dimensions and weights

The structural lines are the same for all three. UPS and FedEx accept parcels up to 150 lb, 108 in long and 165 in length plus girth, and a package over 50 lb already carries additional handling. Above 150 lb the item moves as LTL freight (UPS and FedEx published limits, checked Oct 15, 2026).

Freight class

LTL pricing runs on 18 NMFC freight classes from 50 (densest, lowest cost) to 500. Class is set primarily by density (weight in pounds divided by cubic feet), plus handling, stowability and liability. Higher density earns a lower class and lower cost (NMFTA freight-class explainers, via Fleetworks and NTG Freight, accessed Oct 15, 2026).

Specific codes for these categories: electric generators in crates are NMFC 120040, Class 85 (12 to 13.5 lb per cubic foot), and must ship without fuel, because fuel present makes the load hazmat. Air compressors in crates are NMFC 120060, Class 70 (15 to 22.5 lb per cubic foot) (NMFC code lookup, accessed Oct 15, 2026).

Liftgate and appointment delivery

A heavy unit going to a home has no dock, so a liftgate, an accessorial that lowers the item to the ground at the curb, is usually required for freight delivery. It is commonly forgotten in freight quotes (see our parcel vs LTL guide).

Amazon's heavy-and-bulky freight template requires the carrier to contact the customer within two business days to set a delivery appointment, and requires delivery outside the front door or in the lobby. The carrier may not enter the home (Amazon freight-shipping templates, Seller Central, accessed Oct 15, 2026).

Hazardous-material note

Generators ship dry: any unit with fuel in the tank is hazardous material and must move under hazmat rules (NMFC code lookup, accessed Oct 15, 2026). This is a packing and carrier-selection fact, not a freight-class detail.

FAQ

Questions

Do gun safes, generators and compressors ship parcel or freight? +

It depends on the packed weight. Under 150 lb (and under 108 in long, 165 in length-plus-girth) they ship parcel on UPS or FedEx, with additional handling over 50 lb; over 150 lb they move as LTL freight (UPS and FedEx published limits, checked Oct 15, 2026). Large safes and stationary generators are usually freight; portable generators and smaller compressors often stay parcel.

What is a liftgate and do I need one? +

A liftgate is a freight accessorial that mechanically lowers a heavy item to the ground at a home with no dock. Residential freight delivery almost always needs one, and it is a line item that is easy to leave out of a quote.

Can the carrier bring a gun safe inside the house? +

Standard freight delivery is curbside or threshold, outside the front door or in the lobby, and carriers do not enter the home (Amazon freight-shipping templates, accessed Oct 15, 2026). Inside placement and removal of packaging require a white-glove service tier instead.
