Affordable 3PL for heavy products: what it really costs

An affordable 3PL for heavy products is the one with the lowest total cost per delivered order, not the lowest pick fee. On a 50 to 149 lb carton the carrier charges and the zone usually outweigh the warehouse fees, so a 3PL that holds stock closer to your buyers can cost less even with higher handling fees.

Every fee on a 3PL invoice, and what moves it for heavy products

Why the lowest pick fee is rarely the lowest total

On a small parcel the warehouse fees are a large share of the cost of an order. On a 90 lb carton they are a small one: the carrier's base rate, Additional Handling and the zone dominate. A 3PL with a low pick fee and one warehouse can lose the saving many times over on every order that crosses the country, while a 3PL with three locations ships most orders a short distance.

How to compare two quotes on the same terms

1. Send both 3PLs the same 30 days of real orders, with packed weights, carton sizes and destination ZIP codes.

2. Ask each for the total cost per order, carrier charges and surcharges included, from the warehouse that would ship it.

3. Add storage at your real inventory level, returns at your real return rate, and the monthly minimum.

4. Compare totals, not fee tables. Ask each 3PL where it would cost you more, not just where it saves.

Where ShippingCow fits

ShippingCow is a self-operated US 3PL for products that pack into one carton of 50 to 149 lb, shipping from New Brunswick NJ, Ontario CA and Missouri City TX, so most orders travel a short zone. The Saving Audit reprices your last 30 days of shipments and shows wins and losses by weight, including the orders where we would cost you more.

We are the wrong pick for products under 50 lb, where a national network usually costs less, and for anything over 149 lb.

FAQ

Questions

What is the most affordable 3PL for heavy products? +

The one with the lowest total cost per delivered order on your own shipments. For 50 to 149 lb cartons that usually means stock close to your buyers and carrier surcharges priced well, more than a low pick fee. Compare quotes on the same 30 days of orders.

How much does a 3PL cost? +

It depends on your volume, storage and weight. A 3PL charges for receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging, shipping, surcharges and returns, often with a monthly minimum. For heavy products the shipping lines are usually the largest, so ask for a total per order.

What fees do 3PLs charge? +

Receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging, shipping and carrier surcharges on every order, and often setup, returns, long-term storage and a monthly minimum. In the 2026 survey, 87% of warehouses charge for returns and 55% charge a setup fee.

Do 3PLs charge more for heavy items? +

Usually, through carrier surcharges more than warehouse fees: Additional Handling on every package over 50 lb, and a Large Package or Oversize charge with a 90 lb minimum over 110 lb. Ask for pick fees by weight too, since survey averages cover standard items only.

Do 3PLs have monthly minimums? +

Many do, and they are rising: in the survey, minimums rose 53% from 2024 to 2025 and about 45% more in 2026. Ask for the minimum in writing and check it against your slow months.

Is it cheaper to ship heavy items myself? +

Sometimes, at low volume from one region. A 3PL tends to win once your orders spread across the country, because stock in several locations cuts the zone on every heavy parcel. Price both on your own orders.
