Amazon FBA alternative for heavy items
Every FBA unit over 50 lb falls in Amazon's Extra-large size tier, where fulfillment fees run by weight band and, since January 15, 2026, on the greater of actual and dimensional weight. The alternatives are Fulfilled by Merchant from your own warehouse or a 3PL, and Seller Fulfilled Prime, which keeps the Prime badge. Which costs less depends on your band's fee against a 3PL's landed cost per order.
What FBA adds up for an Extra-large item in 2026
| Charge | What applies | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Size tier | Every unit over 50 lb is Extra-large, in bands of 50 to 70 lb, 70 to 150 lb and over 150 lb | Find your band in Seller Central's fee preview |
| Billable weight | The greater of actual and dimensional weight, since Jan 15, 2026 | Measure the packed unit, not the product |
| Overmax | A surcharge on Extra-large units over 96 in long or 130 in in length plus girth | A carton just over a line pays it on every unit |
| Fuel and logistics surcharge | 3.5% on FBA fulfillment fees since Apr 17, 2026 | It stacks on the base fee |
| Peak fees | Higher fulfillment fees from Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027 | Your heaviest season may be the priciest |
| Storage | Oversize storage per cubic foot, higher from October to December | Slow movers cost the most |
| Inbound placement | Extra-large units pay no placement fee | One charge heavy items avoid |

FBA, FBM or Seller Fulfilled Prime for a heavy item
| Route | Who ships | Prime badge | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| FBA | Amazon | Yes | The Extra-large fee for your band still leaves a margin, and you want Amazon to handle service |
| FBM, from your warehouse or a 3PL | You or your 3PL | Not on a standard listing | Volume is uneven, or you want control of the carton, carrier and returns |
| Seller Fulfilled Prime | You or your 3PL | Yes, after a 30-day trial | You can hold the SFP speed and on-time metrics on enough Prime orders |
How to compare FBA with a 3PL on one SKU
1. Find the SKU's Extra-large band and fee in Seller Central, using the greater of actual and dimensional weight.
2. Add the 3.5% surcharge, any Overmax charge, peak fees for the season, and storage for the cubic feet the stock sits in each month.
3. Ask a 3PL for its landed cost per order on the same SKU from its closest warehouse to your real buyers, carrier surcharges included.
4. Compare the two at your actual monthly volume, and add what each does with a returned unit.
Where ShippingCow fits
ShippingCow is a self-operated US 3PL for products that pack into one carton of 50 to 149 lb, best at 71 to 110 lb, shipping from New Brunswick NJ, Ontario CA and Missouri City TX, which is what Seller Fulfilled Prime's Extra-large speed rule rewards. Returned powered goods go to a repair bench in New Jersey instead of being written off.
FBA can still win for a fast-moving heavy SKU with a low return rate. The Saving Audit prices your own orders both ways, including where we would cost you more.

Questions
What is the best alternative to FBA for heavy items? +
For most sellers of 50 to 149 lb products, Fulfilled by Merchant or Seller Fulfilled Prime from a 3PL that ships this band every day and holds stock in more than one region. SFP keeps the Prime badge; FBM is simpler when volume is uneven. Compare both with your FBA fee on the same SKU.
Are items over 50 lb Extra-large on Amazon? +
Yes. In the 2026 size tiers, every FBA unit over 50 lb is Extra-large, priced in bands of 50 to 70 lb, 70 to 150 lb and over 150 lb.
Does Amazon FBA charge on dimensional weight? +
Yes, since January 15, 2026 FBA fees use the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so a large, light carton can bill heavier than it weighs.
What is the Amazon Overmax surcharge? +
A surcharge on Extra-large units longer than 96 in or over 130 in in length plus girth. It applies per unit, on top of the fulfillment fee.
Can I keep the Prime badge without FBA? +
Yes, through Seller Fulfilled Prime: you or your 3PL ship the Prime orders after a 30-day trial. For Extra Large items Amazon wants a two-day date on at least 25% of Prime page views and a five-day date on at least 60%.
Is FBM cheaper than FBA for heavy items? +
Often, but not always. FBM moves the carrier surcharges to you, so the answer depends on your lanes and volume. Price the same SKU both ways before you move stock.
