Heavy parcel shipping statistics 2026 (50 to 149 lb)

By Jay, founder of ShippingCow. Last updated 2026-10-14.

Answer: UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling above 50 lb actual weight and treat packages over 110 lb as Large Package or Oversize. Both cap parcels at 150 lb, 108 in long and 165 in length plus girth. USPS Ground Advantage stops at 70 lb. Thresholds below are dated and sourced, with no prices.

What are the maximum weight and size limits for a parcel?

Length is the longest side. Girth is 2 x width + 2 x height. Length plus girth is length + girth.

A carton over 70 lb cannot ship on USPS Ground Advantage, so USPS covers only the 50 to 70 lb end of the band. On UPS and FedEx a 50 to 149 lb carton fits under the weight cap, but a long carton can still fail the size caps.

Which Additional Handling triggers hit a 50 to 149 lb parcel?

A package is charged when it meets any one trigger.

UPS assesses only one Additional Handling charge per package, checked in this order: weight, length plus girth, length, width, cubic size, packaging (UPS 2026 guide p. 181).

What triggers Large Package or Oversize?

This is the higher tier for big or very heavy cartons. Any one trigger is enough.

A carton over 110 lb is Large Package or Oversize on weight alone. Every carton from 111 to 149 lb lands here. UPS does not assess Additional Handling when a Large Package Surcharge applies (UPS 2026 guide p. 183).

What dimensional weight divisor does each carrier use?

Dimensional weight is length x width x height in inches, divided by the divisor. The carrier bills the greater of actual and dimensional weight.

### A worked example (our arithmetic, not a carrier quote)

A carton measures 30 x 24 x 20 in and weighs 71 lb.

- Cubic volume: 30 x 24 x 20 = 14,400 cubic in. That is over the 10,368 Additional Handling line and under the 17,280 Large Package line.

- Length plus girth: 30 + (2 x 24) + (2 x 20) = 118 in. That is over the 105 in Additional Handling line at FedEx and UPS, and under the 130 in Oversize and Large Package line.

- Dimensional weight at FedEx and UPS: 14,400 / 139 = 103.6, rounded up to 104 lb. The carton bills as 104 lb, not 71 lb.

Weight alone already triggers Additional Handling. Size adds a second reason.

What share of the US can a warehouse network reach in 2 days? (modeled, not measured)

Modeled, not measured. This is our model, not a carrier lookup and not a delivery promise.

Method, in two lines: We measured straight-line miles from each warehouse ZIP to every US ZIP area and weighted each by its Census 2020 population. A ZIP counts as 2 ground days away within 600 miles (conservative) or 1,000 miles (optimistic) of the nearest warehouse, bands fitted to three published UPS Ground transit maps.

Share of the contiguous-US population (48 states and DC) within 2 ground days. Generated 2026-10-13. Each cell reads conservative to optimistic.

Warehouse setup2 days5 daysAverage zone
New Brunswick, NJ only35 to 57%85 to 100%5.23
Ontario, CA only16 to 24%85 to 100%6.54
NJ and CA51 to 81%100%4.19
NJ, CA and Missouri City, TX66 to 98%100%3.74

What the table shows:

- One warehouse is not enough for a national 2-day reach. The CA-only row is the weakest.

- Adding Texas lifts the 2-day share by 15.5 to 17.5 points.

- If every parcel ran one day slower than modeled, the conservative 2-day share would fall to 19% for NJ and CA, and 22% with Texas.

Limits you should know:

- Miles are straight-line, not road or hub routes. Real zones come from a ZIP-pair table, so a ZIP near a band edge can be one zone off.

- UPS's transit maps carry a footnote that time commitments do not apply to Additional Handling or Large Package shipments. A 50 to 149 lb parcel may run slower than the map.

- Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the territories (1.73% of ZCTA population) are not modeled.

- The model assumes every SKU is stocked at every warehouse and each order ships from the nearest one.

Inputs: Census 2020 Gazetteer ZCTA file for ZIP locations and Census TIGERweb ZCTA layer for population, both pulled 2026-10-13.
