Best 3PL for mattresses (bed in a box)
Boxed mattresses weigh from under 40 lb for a foam twin to 146 lb for a hybrid king, so most sizes above twin pay carrier Additional Handling and the largest hybrids sit near the 150 lb parcel limit. A mattress 3PL has to price those lines, rotate stock that should not sit compressed for long, and plan for trials that let buyers return a mattress for up to a year.

What the carrier lines mean for a mattress
Every box over 50 lb pays Additional Handling at UPS and FedEx, so nearly every queen and king does. Length plus girth catches long rolls: a 76 in roll that is 16 in across measures 76 + 32 + 32 = 140 in, over the 130 in line, so it bills as a Large Package or Oversize at a 90 lb minimum. A roll shipped in a poly bag rather than a corrugated box adds Additional Handling for packaging. Anything over 150 lb moves as freight.
Compressed stock ages
Tuft & Needle warns buyers that leaving a mattress compressed for longer than 4 weeks could damage it. Warehouse stock sits compressed far longer than that between arrival and sale, so ask a mattress 3PL to ship first in, first out by lot and to report inventory age by SKU.
Trials and returns
Trials run from 100 nights (Casper, Purple, Zinus) to 365 nights (Nectar, Saatva), so a mattress can come back up to a year after it ships. Many brands do not bring opened mattresses back at all: Nectar and Saatva donate or recycle them, and Tuft & Needle routes opened returns to a donation network while unopened ones come back on a carrier call tag. Plan which returns come to the warehouse, and what the 3PL does with them.
Where ShippingCow fits
Boxed mattresses of 50 to 149 lb fit ShippingCow's band, and queen and king hybrids sit in its 71 to 110 lb sweet spot. Each order ships from the closest of New Brunswick NJ, Ontario CA and Missouri City TX. We take mattress returns but do not refurbish mattresses; our repair bench works on board-level electronics.
We are the wrong pick for mattresses delivered white-glove or set up in the room, and for any box over 149 lb.
What to ask a mattress 3PL
1. What does each of my sizes pay in Additional Handling, and which rolls cross 130 in in length plus girth?
2. How do you rotate compressed stock, and will you report inventory age by SKU?
3. How do you receive unopened returns on a call tag, and what do you do with an opened one?
4. Which warehouse would ship each of my orders, and at what zone?
5. Can you ship a mattress and its bed frame or base together when an order has both?

Questions
What is the best 3PL for a mattress brand? +
One that ships boxed mattresses of 50 to 149 lb every day, prices Additional Handling and the 130 in length plus girth line on each size, rotates compressed stock first in, first out, and has a clear process for trial returns. Ask for those in writing and compare totals on your own orders.
How much does a boxed mattress weigh? +
From under 40 lb for a foam twin to 146 lb for a hybrid king. A foam queen is about 60 to 63 lb boxed; hybrid queens run about 95 to 98 lb.
Does a mattress in a box ship by UPS or FedEx? +
Yes, when the box stays under 150 lb, 108 in long and 165 in in length plus girth. Most queens and kings pay Additional Handling for weight, and long rolls can bill as a Large Package or Oversize at a 90 lb minimum.
How long can a mattress stay compressed in a warehouse? +
Tuft & Needle tells buyers that more than 4 weeks compressed could damage a mattress. Warehouse stock waits longer, so rotate it first in, first out and track its age.
What happens to returned mattresses? +
Often they are donated or recycled rather than shipped back: Nectar and Saatva donate, and Tuft & Needle routes opened returns to a donation network. Unopened mattresses usually come back to the warehouse on a carrier call tag.
Do mattress boxes pay oversize charges? +
Long ones can. A 76 in roll that is 16 in across measures 140 in in length plus girth, over the 130 in line, so it bills as a Large Package or Oversize at a 90 lb minimum.
