Shipping Furniture Through UPS and FedEx: 50 to 149 lb Rules

Short answer. Shipping furniture through UPS or FedEx at 50 to 149 lb comes down to four measurements: longest side, length plus girth (the longest side plus 2 x width plus 2 x height), scale weight and billable weight. Cross FedEx's 130 in length-plus-girth line and the carton picks up an Oversize Charge, billed at a 90 lb minimum.

You've got a flat-packed bookcase at 58 lb, or an accent chair in a box at 52 lb, and the invoice shows a handling line you didn't expect. The carton isn't heavy by freight standards. It crossed a line nobody told you about.

This guide covers those lines for furniture cartons on UPS and FedEx, with a source and retrieval date beside every value. For the wider picture, see our heavy parcel fulfillment overview.

What counts as furniture in the 50 to 149 lb band?

Two carton shapes cover most of it.

Flat-packed pieces (bookcases, desk tops, shelving, bed frames) ship long and thin: 60 inches or more on the longest side, 8 to 14 on the others. They tend to trip longest-side rules and stay under the 130 in oversize line.

Boxed pieces (accent chairs, compressed sofas, ottomans) ship short and deep. The longest side is often under 48 inches, but the other two are big. They tend to trip length plus girth.

Know your shape and you know which line to watch first. Our furniture industry page and 3PLs for furniture cover the category. This page stays on carrier rules.

What are the UPS and FedEx size and weight limits for furniture?

Two things stand out. The 150 lb, 108 in and 165 in lines are the outer wall, and a carton past them draws its own charge. And the 130 in line is easy to cross with a boxed piece, as Carton A shows below. Carriers revise these rules, so check the date on your own Service Guide before you set a carton spec.

How do you measure length plus girth on a furniture carton?

Girth is 2 x width plus 2 x height, using the two shorter sides. Length plus girth adds the longest side. A 30 x 28 x 26 in carton gives 30 + 56 + 52 = 138 in.

Three habits keep the numbers honest:

  1. Measure the sealed carton. Dense pieces bow corrugated, and strapping and corner guards add inches. One inch of bulge on both shorter sides adds 4 inches to girth.

  2. Write the longest side down first. Several rules look at it alone.

  3. Keep scale weight and billable weight in separate columns. Billable weight is the greater of scale and dimensional weight. Our dimensional weight guide covers the formula; for daily rates, FedEx and UPS both divide cubic inches by 139 (FedEx Service Guide 2026; UPS 2026 Rate and Service Guide p. 21).

Which carrier rules trigger on four furniture cartons?

A is the surprise. At 52 lb it feels light, but its length plus girth is 8 inches past the FedEx line, so FedEx Oversize applies. Its dimensional weight is 158 lb (30 x 28 x 26 = 21,840 cubic inches, divided by 139 is 157.1, rounded up to 158), so it bills at 158 lb, well above the 90 lb floor. The longest side is only 30 inches, so a shipper who watches one side never sees it coming. Our oversize parcel shipping cost guide covers the cost side.

B is the opposite. At 62 inches it will likely draw a longest-side charge, yet it sits well under the oversize line (106 against 130 in). Long and thin has different fixes than short and fat.

C shows padding breaking a spec. The bare table top was 5 inches under FedEx's 165 in line. Two extra inches of protection on every dimension put it 5 over. Re-measure after every packaging change, including a thicker foam corner.

D shows the scale lying. At 148 lb it is already over the 110 lb Oversize line, and it clears the 150 lb outer limit by only 2 lb. Strapping and a runner board add 3 lb, and it's over. Weigh the carton as it leaves the dock, not as the spec sheet says.

Does a heavy furniture carton need a special label or packaging?

On UPS, yes for the label: a Heavy Package sticker is required above 50 lb (UPS Packaging Guidelines, 2026-08-06), which covers the whole band. UPS also says extremely fragile or heavy objects need special packaging and that fragile articles should stay away from box corners and sides (UPS Prepare Shipment Guide, 2026-09-02). For furniture:

- Keep glass, stone and veneer faces off corners and edges.

- Use a carton rated for the weight, not just the size. This is general packing practice, not a UPS or FedEx rule.

- Block the product so it can't shift.

How do you keep furniture cartons under the lines?

  1. Trim the fat carton. Taking 2 inches off both shorter sides of Carton A takes length plus girth to 130, which is not over the line, but the carton is then 30 x 26 x 24 = 18,720 cubic inches, still over 17,280, so Oversize still applies. Taking 3 inches off each gives 30 x 25 x 23: 126 in length plus girth and 17,250 cubic inches, under both lines with almost no margin on volume.

  2. Split the set. A table top and legs may ride better as two cartons. Run both on the same measurements, because each carton carries its own rules.

  3. Fix the data before you quote. Wrong carton dimensions in your cart mean the checkout rate isn't the invoice rate.

  4. Pick the carrier per carton. The carriers draw some lines in different places. See the FedEx additional handling guide and our carrier comparison for heavy packages.

When a carton sits within a few pounds or inches of the outer wall, or several heavy cartons go to one address, price LTL against parcel for the same shipment. The heavy parcel versus LTL guide lays out that call.

When are we not the right call?

We run a US 3PL built for 50 to 149 lb parcels. We're probably not your fit if:

- Your product is under 50 lb. Lighter parcels skip the weight rules above.

- Your cartons are over 149 lb or past the carrier outer walls. That's freight.

- You ship a handful of orders a month. A carrier pickup from your own space may be simpler.

- Your piece ships assembled, not in a sealed carton. The rules above assume a box.

FAQ

Questions

Can I ship furniture over 100 lb through UPS or FedEx? +

Yes, up to a point. FedEx's charge table treats a Ground package over 150 lb, 108 in long or 165 in in length plus girth as unauthorized, and UPS publishes the same outer limits on its support page (read 2026-10-13). Between 50 and 149 lb a sealed carton can ship, but expect it to trip at least one handling rule.

How do I calculate length plus girth for a furniture box? +

Take the longest side as the length. Add two times the width and two times the height. A 30 x 28 x 26 in carton gives 30 + 56 + 52 = 138 in, past FedEx's 130 in oversize line. Measure the sealed carton, not the design drawing, because bulge adds inches.

Is flat-packed furniture easier to ship than boxed furniture? +

Neither is automatically easier. Flat-packed pieces tend to be long and thin, so they trip longest-side rules but often stay under the 130 in oversize line. Boxed pieces are short and deep, so they trip length plus girth. Check each carton's numbers against the table before choosing a pack-out.

Do I need a Heavy Package label on a 60 lb furniture carton? +

On UPS, yes. UPS says a Heavy Package sticker is required above 50 lb (UPS Packaging Guidelines, 2026-08-06), so a 60 lb carton needs one. We have not found a matching FedEx label rule for this band, so check the current FedEx Service Guide.

When does LTL beat UPS or FedEx for furniture? +

Consider LTL when a carton sits near the 150 lb, 108 in or 165 in lines, when several heavy cartons go to one address, or when the recipient needs an appointment. Get a parcel quote and an LTL quote for the same shipment and compare them before you decide.
