UPS Large Package Surcharge for 50-149 lb Parcels (2026)
UPS charges its Large Package Surcharge when a domestic package is longer than 96 in, measures over 130 in in length plus girth, exceeds 17,280 cubic inches, or weighs over 110 lb. UPS then bills it at a 90 lb minimum. Anything past 150 lb, 108 in or 165 in length plus girth is over UPS's maximum limits.
A 62 lb box can be billed like a 147 lb one. That surprises most merchants because the Large Package Surcharge isn't a weight line the way Additional Handling is. It's a size line first, and weight only joins it at 110 lb. In the 50 to 149 lb band, you can cross it with a box that feels moderate, or with a compact box that's simply dense.
Below: the current UPS numbers with dates, then seven real cartons. No prices appear, because contract, zone and residential status change the amount. The triggers are what you control.
What triggers the UPS large package surcharge on a 50 to 149 lb box?
UPS treats a domestic package as a Large Package when any one of these is true:
- The longest side is over 96 in.
- Length plus girth is over 130 in.
- Cubic size is over 17,280 cubic inches.
- Actual weight is over 110 lb.
Length is the longest side. Girth is twice the width plus twice the height, so length plus girth is L + 2W + 2H. Cubic size is L x W x H. Once a package is a Large Package, UPS bills it at a 90 lb minimum, except on Ground with Freight Pricing.
Two things make this awkward for heavy parcels. The 110 lb trigger sits inside your band, so a compact 112 lb box is a Large Package. And the cubic line is easy to hit by accident: 40 x 24 x 18 sits exactly on 17,280, and so does 30 x 24 x 24. One more inch on any side tips it over. Measure the packed carton, bulge and strapping included, not the spec sheet.

The 2026 guide lists the cubic and 110 lb triggers but gives no start date.
FedEx's Oversize charge uses the same four lines and 90 lb minimum in its 2026 Service Guide (source 4 below). Only the name differs. Our FedEx Additional Handling guide covers that side.
How is Additional Handling different, and can one box get both?
In UPS's 2026 guide (p. 181), Additional Handling applies at over 50 lb actual weight, length plus girth over 105 in, a longest side over 48 in, a second-longest side over 30 in, cubic size over 10,368 cubic inches, or a package that isn't fully encased in corrugated. UPS assesses only one Additional Handling charge per package.
In your band, every box from 51 lb up already meets the weight trigger. The question is whether the box climbs to Large Package.
UPS's 2026 Rate and Service Guide (p. 183) says an Additional Handling charge will not be assessed when a Large Package Surcharge is applied. Treat that as a swap, not an add-on. The line changes, and the 90 lb minimum arrives with it.
Which rules trigger on real 50 to 149 lb cartons?
Seven cartons, run through the numbers above. Dimensional weight is cubic inches divided by 139 (UPS 2026 guide p. 21), rounded up to the next pound. The 2025 guide also rounds fractions of an inch up before you multiply. Billed weight is the greater of actual and dimensional, with a 90 lb floor on Large Packages.
| # | Actual lb | L x W x H (in) | Length plus girth (in) | Cubic (in3) | Rules triggered | Billed at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 | 36 x 24 x 12 | 108 | 10,368 | Additional Handling (length plus girth over 105); weight and cubic size sit exactly on their limits | 75 lb (dimensional) |
| 2 | 55 | 40 x 20 x 12 | 104 | 9,600 | Additional Handling (weight) | 70 lb (dimensional) |
| 3 | 62 | 52 x 28 x 14 | 136 | 20,384 | Large Package (length plus girth, cubic); Additional Handling not added (UPS 2026 guide p. 183) | 147 lb (dimensional) |
| 4 | 70 | 100 x 12 x 8 | 140 | 9,600 | Large Package (longest side over 96 in; length plus girth of 140 is also over 130) | 90 lb (minimum) |
| 5 | 112 | 30 x 24 x 18 | 114 | 12,960 | Large Package (weight) | 112 lb (actual) |
| 6 | 149 | 40 x 30 x 20 | 140 | 24,000 | Large Package (weight, length plus girth, cubic) | 173 lb (dimensional) |
| 7 | 149 | 60 x 30 x 24 | 168 | 43,200 | Over Maximum Limits (length plus girth over 165 in) | Not accepted |
What the rows show:
- Row 1 sits exactly on 50 lb and 10,368 cubic inches, so weight and cube don't fire. Its length plus girth is 36 + (2 x 24) + (2 x 12) = 108 in, over the 105 in line, so Additional Handling applies. Its dimensional weight is 10,368 / 139 = 74.6, rounded up to 75 lb. Packaging, such as shrink wrap or a non-corrugated outer, can also trigger Additional Handling (2025 guide, source 3).
- Row 3 weighs 62 lb. Its 52 in side also beats the 48 in line, but Large Package governs.
- Row 4 is the minimum at work. A 70 lb long, narrow carton with a 100 in side bills at 90 lb. Its dimensional weight is 9,600 / 139 = 69.1, rounded up to 70, so the floor wins.
- Row 5 is dense, not big. Its dimensional weight is 12,960 / 139 = 93.2, rounded up to 94, so the 112 lb actual weight wins.
- Row 7 weighs 149 lb, under the 150 lb cap, yet fails on length plus girth.
Why does a 62 lb box bill at 147 lb?
Row 3 is 52 x 28 x 14 in, so 20,384 cubic inches divided by 139 is about 146.6, rounded up to 147. UPS charges the greater of actual and dimensional weight, and 147 beats 62. The 90 lb floor never comes into play, because dimensional weight is already above it.
Two levers work at once: the surcharge line you cross, and the weight you're billed on. Our dimensional weight guide covers the divisor and rounding.
How do you keep a 50 to 149 lb box under the Large Package line?
- Weigh it packed. A 106 lb product in a 6 lb carton with dunnage is a 112 lb Large Package.
- Check all three sides at once. A box can pass on length and fail on cubic size. Write 96 in, 130 in and 17,280 cubic inches next to the carton drawing.
- Watch packaging triggers. UPS lists cartons not fully encased in corrugated, and cylindrical shapes, as Additional Handling items.
- Price the split on your own lanes. Two boxes under 110 lb can stay out of Large Package, but each box over 50 lb carries its own Additional Handling line. Run both.

When are we not the right call?
A 3PL changes where a box ships from and how it's packed, not UPS's definitions.
- Under 50 lb. The weight trigger doesn't apply to you, and we're built for 50 to 149 lb, not lighter parcels.
- Over 150 lb, 108 in or 165 in length plus girth. UPS won't take it as a parcel. That's LTL or other freight, and our heavy parcel vs LTL guide shows where the line falls.
- One carton problem. If a single SKU keeps crossing 110 lb or 17,280 cubic inches, redesign the carton first. A warehouse partner won't fix a box that's an inch too big.
If your parcels do sit between 50 and 149 lb, our heavy parcel fulfillment page explains how we run them, and our New Jersey, California and Texas pages show where.

Questions
What is the UPS large package surcharge threshold? +
A domestic UPS package becomes a Large Package when its longest side is over 96 in, its length plus girth is over 130 in, its cubic size is over 17,280 cubic inches, or its actual weight is over 110 lb. Any one of those is enough, and UPS then applies a 90 lb minimum billable weight.
Is the UPS Large Package Surcharge based on weight? +
Partly. Weight alone triggers it only above 110 lb of actual weight. Below that, size decides: a 62 lb box can qualify on length plus girth or cubic size. Weight also drives billing, because UPS charges the greater of actual or dimensional weight, with a 90 lb floor on Large Packages.
Can UPS charge Additional Handling and Large Package on the same box? +
No. UPS's 2026 Rate and Service Guide (p. 183) says an Additional Handling charge will not be assessed when a Large Package Surcharge is applied, so the two don't stack on one box.
What is the largest package UPS will ship in the US? +
UPS's current support page lists 150 lb, 108 in in length and 165 in length plus girth as the maximums. A package over any of them is not accepted, and one found in the network gets an Over Maximum Limits charge and may be returned at the shipper's expense. A 149 lb box can still exceed the size limit.
How do I keep a 100 lb box from becoming a Large Package? +
At 100 lb you have 10 lb of room under the weight line, so watch size. Keep the packed carton at or under 96 in long, 130 in length plus girth and 17,280 cubic inches, and weigh it packed, with dunnage and strapping. A 104 lb product in a 7 lb carton is 111 lb.
